Music Marketing Blog

My group worked on portraying the 'pop' music genre for our Music Marketing project. Our task was to take a song made by a popular pop artist and use it as the first release for our "band". We were required to make a music video, compile research on music marketing, and create a presentation similar to what would be used in an actual artist's portfolio to appeal to investors. The first step taken was researching what pop groups do to help market their music. This consisted of watching music videos with the pop genre as well as researching the beginnings of some of the most popular pop artists such as BTS or Taylor Swift. This all contributed to planning out how certain aspects of the project, like the music video, would turn out.

One element used in the music video was several cuts. These cuts are commonly used in music videos in order to keep the shot dynamic, go from one part of the story to the next, and accentuate the fast-paced, peppy tone of the music. All this as well as how this music video would be distributed, use of technological convergence to get a larger reach, and more was recorded in the word document below by all group members. Certain members had greater strengths in certain areas, and focused on them accordingly. The use of said document helped to keep thoughts organized, ensuring the project went smoothly.

After gathering thoughts and planning out a schedule for when certain tasks should be completed, the group decided to film the music video first. With video techniques fresh in our minds, it made sense to film the video before completing the rest of the tasks. This early start gave us flexibility on the video, allowing any errors to be corrected, in turn, perfecting the video and message we worked on portraying. A written draft of the storyboard was completed, with descriptions on where the video would be cut, what would be happening in each shot, and certain techniques that would be used within these shots, and later, shots used within the video were drawn out.
In the end, the group produced a video that accurately portrayed the vision we had, and in a way that was steady and well-thought out. Below is a picture of both storyboard, as well as shots used in the video that were described within that same storyboard.

At this point, the bulk of the project had been completed. The layout, information, and music video were completed, editing was almost complete, and all that was left to do was the presentation. This was far from a simple task though. The purpose of the presentation is to appeal to investors who would fund the distribution and music production of the "band" our group had created. There were three main aspects the presentation needed. The first was accurate information. Using a range of sources, the group compiled information on the marketing techniques used by successful pop bands. Two groups and two studies per group gave a good idea on what marketing techniques work in the music world.

The next step was making the project clear and concise. Short sentences for each slide made the presentation look less cluttered and gave the presenters a chance to speak about the subject as opposed to just reading off of a slide. This along with style choices made the presentation interesting to a possible investor for the "band". The final step was rehearsing the project to make it seem professional, allow group members to emphasize on what they are presenting, and have it run smoothly. While there were several tasks to be completed, our group laid out everything in an organized manner and incorporated elements of solo work on fields that are strong for each member as well as teamwork in ideas and filming of the music video along with the material on the presentation.
