Music Marketing Blog

Our group tackled the "pop" music genre for our Music Marketing project. Our objective was to create a band and release a song by a popular pop artist as our first single. To achieve this, we had to produce a music video, research music marketing strategies, and create a presentation similar to what an actual artist would use to attract investors.

We started by researching the marketing strategies used by popular pop groups and studying the careers of artists such as BTS or Taylor Swift. This helped us plan the elements of the project, including the music video. The video was edited with cuts to keep it dynamic and highlight the fast-paced, peppy tone of the music. All group members documented the video's concept, distribution plan, and use of technological convergence to increase reach in a shared word document. Members with strengths in specific areas focused on those tasks.

The group then filmed the music video first, as the techniques were still fresh in our minds. This allowed us to refine the video as we went along, giving us the flexibility to correct any errors and perfect the message we wanted to convey. We created a written draft of the storyboard with descriptions of cuts, shots, and techniques to be used. The final product accurately reflected our vision and was well-planned.

For the presentation, the group's goal was to convince potential investors to fund the distribution and music production of our created "band." To make the presentation appealing, the group compiled accurate information on successful pop bands' marketing techniques and divided it into two groups and two studies per group. The presentation was kept clear and concise with short sentences on each slide to avoid clutter, and style choices were made to make it interesting to investors. Finally, the group rehearsed the presentation to make it professional and run smoothly.

With careful organization and incorporation of each member's strengths, the group successfully completed the project, including the music video and presentation. I learned the importance of brainstorming before a project. This allows the ideas to flourish easier when filmed. I also learned that work should be done together instead of certain jobs split between certain people. All in all, the group did well in my eyes. My work with some of my team members will help me be successful in the portfolio project. I think this project has opened my eyes to my artistic potential and let me explore more in terms of filming. I will go in a different direction for the portfolio to challenge myself and also make the project more exciting
