Film Opening Locations

        Week 4

This post will be more of a transitional one. The past three weeks have been heavily focused on research for the project and these last four weeks will be filming and editing. The story is looking solid and fits all the requirements for the drama genre. Film location is important to the story for the film opening.

It sets up who the character is, why they do the things they do, essentially it shows you instead of telling you what will go on in the opening. Camila has decided to shoot in her room as she will be the actor for the opening. We will make the room look messy and there will be suggestive posters on the wall. The style chosen by Camila is grunge.

Due to the character's background, it makes sense to choose this dark style.

Film Opening Mood board and Storyboard

 Week 3

This is the final post for Week 3. There was a lot of progress to the story this week, with the storyboard being written up, a mood board for our character, and film ideas fleshed out. I think a lot of the success this week goes to the group meetings. Being able to speak freely with fellow classmates about our project aided in finding what will work and will not. This post will focus mainly on the storyboard and mood board Camila and I worked to create.

We stuck with the story Camila had thought up about drug addiction. As seen in the storyboard, it will be focused on a young girl who is addicted to heroin. The film opening will begin by showing how she was once a normal girl, but heroin made her lose that innocence. As she gets ready to inject herself with the heroin, she winces in pain.

The scene then shows her gain courage to drug herself. Once she does, the camera will portray how the character is feeling at the moment. The once strict and uniform camera movement will become looser and calmer, showing how the character feels under the influence of the drugs. The scene then fades to black, synonymous with how the lead becomes unconscious and there is where the title screen will appear.

We have yet to think of a title that would fit for our story, but it will likely work with the narrative and the "numbness" of the black background. The character wakes up once she hears her mother calling her from outside the bathroom, once she walks in, she finds out what her daughter has done. The story lets the audience understand that the rest of the movie will show our characters road to recovery, as her mother found out.

The storyboard will likely be fleshed out a little more but it is for the most part complete. Our character on the other hand, is still somewhat in the works. Camila and I have created a mood board of certain characteristics we want our character to have.
Breaking down the mood board, we can see there are several instances of hopeless, drug-addicted, women. Jane Margolis from Breaking Bad is a key character that will contribute to the making of our character. She was once a regular girl but heroin caused her think irrationally and eventually die from it's use. Her father, an air-traffic controller, became so distraught that he incidentally caused two planes to crash into each other. This is a message on how the use of drugs and it's consequences to one person can cause another to feel grief and affect them and others on in a negative way.

Another important part of this mood board are the colors. They are obviously cold and dark. As discussed before, drama relies heavily on the use of color and light to tell the emotional part of a story. The sad and hopeless colors chosen will help portray the loneliness and hopelessness our character feels.

The use of visual elements like storyboards and mood boards aids in displaying thoughts so you can see them right in front of you. The elements discussed above will be implemented into the film opening Camila and I are working on.

Group Meeting #1

Week 3

Today was the first group meeting. I spoke about my ideas for my film opening, specifically my story idea, and received a lot of good feedback. I was a little unsure on how we would show a "loss of innocence" within the film opening, but my group gave me confidence on an idea Camila and I had using old pictures of our main character when they were younger and innocent. I was also told my idea to include dramatic elements within the opening alongside the reality of drug use was unique and a great way to ease the tension in the start of the movie. Essentially, the group aided in taking some half-baked ideas and lifting them up into ideas that I will certainly use within my blog opening.

Having another 'drama' group in this meeting helped because we bounced ideas off of each other on dramatic archetypes. I learned that it is smart to watch the film openings for the films I do research on in order to influence my opening. I was also given a tip to use makeup effects on the main characters arm to show past use of heroin, the drug she will be addicted to within the opening. These little elements are what make a movie memorable for having attention to detail, so I'm glad I was given the idea. These meetings are obviously great for sharing ideas with a person that might be doing something similar to you in terms of technical elements or even story.

This group meeting gave me confidence in my group's ideas and even gave me new ones that I will likely put in my opening. All members had great story ideas, but just needed that little boost of confidence within their thoughts so they could flourish within their respective projects. This group meeting was a big help for everyone and I will make sure to present new ideas in the next one, especially because I will have more information to share on my project.

Film Opening Inspiration

 Week 3

This post's focus is on films that will be used for the story Camila and I are working on. We want to make the main focus of the film about drug addiction and how it affects people involved. The films we picked that portray this message wonderfully are Beautiful Boy by Felix van Groeningen and 28 Days by Betty Thomas. Both films contain characters that are addicted to a substance.

Beautiful Boy is a film based off of reality. It follows the story of Nic Sheff, a young man addicted to crystal meth, and his father David Sheff, who has to deal with Nic's addiction alongside him. The film recounts the experiences the two felt when going through the time in their life. The film does a great job portraying how drug addiction affects not only the addict, but also the people around them. David attempts to help Nic get through his addiction but has trouble as he continuously relapses. The drama film does a great job at capturing these frustrating and somber moments. It goes to show how drugs can turn a talented person into an obsessive addict who puts everything valuable to them at risk for it.

The other film researched was 28 Days, another drama film focused on someone with an addiction. This time, it's Gwen Cummings, a writer from New York City. The film is named 28 days as it is a set amount of days she must spend at a treatment facility for people like her. Gwen slowly learns to accept the treatment, even building relationships with people who are in similar situations as she is. She begins to confront her problem head on and become a more responsible person overall. This aids in helping her restore relationships with friends and family and become a fully functioning person once again. The film, while comedic, helps to display that those who are addicted are not alone, and there are people who can relate with issues that they face

The messages in these movies resonate with those Camila and I are attempting to portray in our film opening. It only makes sense to use successful films as a reference to make a successful film. All this will aid in visualizing our opening and writing up our storyboard before filming.

Film Opening Planning

  Week 3

This post marks the beginning of the story planning portion of the blogs. So far, posts have been focused on drama movie elements, and in these planning posts, Camila and I will reflect the research in our plans for the film opening. The story is being thought-out in order to fit within the drama genre. So far, we have thought of including an aspect of drug addiction. This can work greatly with the drama genre as it includes real instances of tragedy, a crucial element to the drama genre. Drama is the best choice to tell this story for a few reasons.

As learned from prior research, drama is a great choice to tell any story, whether it be about an abusive perfectionist jazz instructor ruining the social life of a promising young drummer (Whiplash), or a pair of star-cross'd lovers who are doomed to die as a result of their love for each other (Romeo & Juliet). Our story fits in with this genre since it incorporates elements of real life emotion, while also allowing for symbolistic elements like meaningful lighting, costume design, and other mise-en-scene elements to dramatize the story. Our story, focused on drug addiction and how it impacts the people involved is the perfect realistic story that contains elements of tragic truth coupled with displaying emotion of characters within the story. Ultimately, drama elements will work to portray our story.

Furthermore, our story contains characters that the audience can resonate with. The drama genre is heavily focused on pulling the audience in with characters that they can relate to. Drama characters have flaws that bring them down. These flaws allow the characters personality to show and allows audiences to pity, hate, fear, or cheer on characters. Our main character, a drug addict, fits in to this perfectly. Addiction is something people struggle with on a daily basis, it can be something as small as a phone addiction. The repercussions of addiction will be portrayed within our film. These elements are what allow the audience to "connect" with the characters. For audiences to be truly hooked though, there needs to be a turning point within the film. This could be success in recovery, or our character falling deeper into addiction. These elements will not be completely fleshed out in our opening, but are important to consider when introducing the characters within it.

Finally, a clear plot needs to be shown within the limited time we have for our film opening. Camila and I want to present a sequence of events with our lead character in the film opening. As this is the beginning of a longer film, it should display the current personality and background of our character through the choices they make. These expository choices will set the groundwork for our character and allow them to grow throughout the movie, eventually leaving their old self behind for a newer one. As our character is dealing with addiction, Character vs. Self is the conflict. Addiction to a substance is self-inflicted, and our story will show how our character attempts to crawl out of that addiction. Essentially, our film opening will be the foundation for our plot to develop.

All in all, our film opening will successfully display the essential parts to a drama film. A well-structured plot which follows a conflict, characters that are relatable and can be viewed in an emotional sense, and a story capable of harboring these elements while also being both engaging and interesting. This outline will be reflected on and revised if necessary to fit into our story.

Drama Technical Elements

     Week 2

This is the final post on genre research. I will focus on the technical elements of Drama films. These are all the little things that go into Drama films that may go unnoticed upon the first viewing, but ultimately help the film. This can be lighting, mise-en-scene, costumes, props, sound, and makeup. I will focus on each one briefly

First is lightning. Lighting helps to add to the mood of the film and lets the audience know how to feel. One of the most common forms of lighting in drama films is lighting that can't actually exist in the real world. This can be intense red's, yellow's, or blues, or any mix of the two. The colors represent different feelings. Red is passion or anger, yellow is happiness and blue is cold or sadness. Below are some examples.

West Side Story: The red here represents the bloodshed of the two gangs
Bladerunner 2049: The orange here represent warning or caution
Joker (2019): Throughout the movie, the blue represents the society Joker lives in, here showing him hiding in it

Next is costume design. Costume designs helps to define a character and their personalities. This can be something simple like a color they wear...
Cruella

Or it can be an intricate piece of clothing that goes on to be important throughout the movie.

Batman

These designs, which fall under mise-en-scene, tell a story about the characters that are not apparent in the movie.

Props are the next technical element. These are as common as the other elements, appearing every so often in films. It can be something minor like a breakaway (i.e a bottle, glass, chair) or something pivotal to the story or a character, like the Infinity Stones from the Avcngers films. The latter being more important than other elements, as they are the main focus of the story.

Camila and I will use these technical elements within our film opening to drive the story. Because we have such a limited amount of time, these elements will be very important for the project.

Drama Plot

 Week 2

This entry will focus mainly on plot. So far, genre and characters has been discussed, so it only makes sense to discuss what the driving force behind drama films and all films in general is. The plot. Drama plots have a loose formula, and often require only a few key factors. The first being tragedy. Tragedy is in virtually all drama's whether it be Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet or Hamlet, or in films like Where the Crawdads Sing.

The tragedy in these films and other drama films all aim to keep the story fresh and leave audiences drawn to the film. When a character suffers, the audience pities them and wishes to see them succeed. This suffering can signal the beginning of recovery, like in Where the Crawdads Sing, after the tragedy of Kya being arrested for murder, and then the resolution of her being found Not Guilty. Sometimes though, this tragedy signals the end of the movie, like in Hamlet, when the lead character, Hamlet, duels his opponent, and they both perish.

The next important factor for a Drama is several obstacles in the way of the character. These obstacles can be categorized in several different ways. Character vs. Self, Character vs, Nature, Character vs. Character... the list goes on. A few examples of obstacles being implemented in Drama films can be seen below. The first being in Emma by Jane Austen. Throughout the film our lead, Emma, realizes that she has a destructive behavior. She gets involved in other peoples personal lives and is unable to admit her love for Mr. Knightley. This internal struggle does eventually get resolved and she makes up with her friends and marries Mr. Knightley. This is Character vs. Self.

Next is an example of Character vs. Character. This conflict is very common and often implemented in someway in virtually all films. A famous example is in Romeo & Juliet by Shakespeare. While the film does not focus primarily on Character vs. Character, the duel between Romeo and Tybalt is an important event in the movie. It leads to Romeo's banishment and sets up his plan to fake his death with Juliet. This conflict, like the previous one, helps to set up the end of the movie, and keep the plot moving.

The last factor on plot in Drama is a character's driving force. This is a purpose, something that gives the character reason to continue and allows the audience to cheer on the character. This could be 12 Angry Men's by Sidney Lumet's characters attempting to come up with a decision on whether a young defendant is Guilty or not for his father's murder. This example is one that is shared by all characters in the movie. A more singular driving force can be Whiplash. Andrew Neiman's obsession with being one of the greatest drummers to ever live is what keeps him going. Even after being in a car crash, Neiman still makes his way to the drum set to perform.

All these aspects are what truly make a film dramatic. Elements of heightened suspense, conflict and reasons as for character's behavior help keep audiences emotionally attached to movies. The research done on these successful films will be implemented into the story Camila and I will write for our film opening.

Genre Characters

             Week 2

This blog post will be focused on different characters in drama films. This information will go on to help me within my own project. The characters within drama films often contain 'dramatized' personalities, (it's where the phrase comes from). A common occurrence for characters in drama's is a flaw or an obstacle in their way. This could be Romeo's rashness, or Jonathan Larson's addiction to work on tick...tick...BOOM!

This aids in creating characters that the audience can relate to. Flaws are what make a person human. This will be reflected in the film opening, as our character struggles with day-to-day task under the influence of narcotics. A character similar to ours is Nic Sheff from Beautiful Boy. The movie, which is based off a true story, tells the tale of Nic Sheff, a young man scared of entering adulthood and using drugs and isolating himself to cope. The movie follows Nic overcoming this obstacle/flaw. These characters help to set up a message within the movie. In the case of Beautiful Boy, it's how drugs affect a person and people around them.

All in all, characters make a drama. They are the center of attention within the film. Even if the story is amazing, it is nothing without relatable characters that are able to develop it through overcoming obstacles or falling deeper into them. With all this information, I have learned the importance in sculpting a great character before deciding to film something.

Drama Genre Research

   Week 2

This post will be focused on the "Drama" genre. This seems to be the direction that Camila and I are taking so it makes the most sense to focus research on the genre. Some films I researched were "Whiplash", "Dunkirk", and "Everything, Everywhere, all at once" (with the latter being my favorite). As I previously have discussed, drama films are diverse in purpose and story. This is recurring in "drama" films as the genre can fit in many places. "Whiplash" by Damien Chazelle is a unique twist on musical drama. Instead of a "light-hearted" and predictable plot, Whiplash is "self-aware" with an unorthodox plot. Despite this, the film still manages to contain dramatic archetypes such as meaningful costume design and emotional lighting.

The next film I studied was "Dunkirk". A reason why this film is conflicting with it's dramatic genre is that it is realistic. Most dramatic archetypes focus on how something feels emotionally, incorporating elements within a story that aren't realistic. Dunkirk rarely does this as it focuses more on accurately portraying war. An argument can be made that the tones used in the movie are cold and grey, representing the brutal unfeelingness of warfare. Christopher Nolan would go on to be praised for Dunkirk and be nominated multiple times for the film, despite it not being a 'conventional drama'.

The final film I researched was "Everything, Everywhere, All At Once". This film truly blew me away. Unlike the other two films,
Everything, Everywhere, All At Once exhibited the "Drama" genre perfectly. It used lighting and color to show feelings of characters, several costumes were used to represent characters personalities, and unrealistic elements were used entirely throughout the movie. The reason why this movie stands out compared to other dramas is that it is incredibly unique. Even though it has all these dramatic archetypes, Everything, Everywhere, All At Once is a cluster of many differing conventions. The creators were free to express an absurdist ideology throughout the movie through comedy, science fiction, action, and more. (It's hard for someone who never watched it to believe the pictures below are all from the same film). Essentially, It is a "swirl of anarchy" that works perfectly with the message the film is trying to convey.

In the end, all this research helped me come to a conclusion. My film opening does not need to strictly follow the conventions of drama. The best directors create films with archetypes of it's genre within the movie, while also allowing the movie to be unique by not conforming to some common 'genre agenda'. This will aid me in my project to create a film opening that displays the "drama" genre, while also having individuality.

Genre Research

 Week 1

The 'Portfolio Project' begins! Me and my group member, Camila Coloma, are beginning our journey into a deeper understanding of media; films to be specific. We are currently working on deciding the genre for our film opening. We thought that Drama would be a spectacular choice because it is a great way to express feeling on the screen with mise-en-scene. Drama uses mise-en-scene heavily through the use of costumes and lighting. Our project will implement these techniques and more to add emotion and (most importantly!) drama.

Drama's target audience is mainly females between the ages of 16-30. The thing with drama is that it can be implemented in a variety of ways. This allows the genre to have a larger reach and resonate with diverse audiences.

A few conventions of Drama films are as follows:

  • High Stakes
  • Social, political, or religious turmoil
  • Conflict between characters and relationships
  • Constant action
  • Use of lighting and colors to show emotion
  • Exuberant costume design
The other genre we are interested in working on is 'coming-of-age', but it seems like we are leaning more into drama.

Camila and I will do research on both genres and watch movies on each time before beginning our filming. Till next time!

Music Marketing Blog

Our group tackled the "pop" music genre for our Music Marketing project. Our objective was to create a band and release a song by a popular pop artist as our first single. To achieve this, we had to produce a music video, research music marketing strategies, and create a presentation similar to what an actual artist would use to attract investors.

We started by researching the marketing strategies used by popular pop groups and studying the careers of artists such as BTS or Taylor Swift. This helped us plan the elements of the project, including the music video. The video was edited with cuts to keep it dynamic and highlight the fast-paced, peppy tone of the music. All group members documented the video's concept, distribution plan, and use of technological convergence to increase reach in a shared word document. Members with strengths in specific areas focused on those tasks.

      Planning Document

The group then filmed the music video first, as the techniques were still fresh in our minds. This allowed us to refine the video as we went along, giving us the flexibility to correct any errors and perfect the message we wanted to convey. We created a written draft of the storyboard with descriptions of cuts, shots, and techniques to be used. The final product accurately reflected our vision and was well-planned.

For the presentation, the group's goal was to convince potential investors to fund the distribution and music production of our created "band." To make the presentation appealing, the group compiled accurate information on successful pop bands' marketing techniques and divided it into two groups and two studies per group. The presentation was kept clear and concise with short sentences on each slide to avoid clutter, and style choices were made to make it interesting to investors. Finally, the group rehearsed the presentation to make it professional and run smoothly.

With careful organization and incorporation of each member's strengths, the group successfully completed the project, including the music video and presentation. I learned the importance of brainstorming before a project. This allows the ideas to flourish easier when filmed. I also learned that work should be done together instead of certain jobs split between certain people. All in all, the group did well in my eyes. My work with some of my team members will help me be successful in the portfolio project. I think this project has opened my eyes to my artistic potential and let me explore more in terms of filming. I will go in a different direction for the portfolio to challenge myself and also make the project more exciting

CCR Creation

Week 8 And the final part of the project is here. CCR Creation. I sure had fun making this project and learned a great deal. IN TWO DIRECTO...
