Genre Characters

             Week 2

This blog post will be focused on different characters in drama films. This information will go on to help me within my own project. The characters within drama films often contain 'dramatized' personalities, (it's where the phrase comes from). A common occurrence for characters in drama's is a flaw or an obstacle in their way. This could be Romeo's rashness, or Jonathan Larson's addiction to work on tick...tick...BOOM!

This aids in creating characters that the audience can relate to. Flaws are what make a person human. This will be reflected in the film opening, as our character struggles with day-to-day task under the influence of narcotics. A character similar to ours is Nic Sheff from Beautiful Boy. The movie, which is based off a true story, tells the tale of Nic Sheff, a young man scared of entering adulthood and using drugs and isolating himself to cope. The movie follows Nic overcoming this obstacle/flaw. These characters help to set up a message within the movie. In the case of Beautiful Boy, it's how drugs affect a person and people around them.

All in all, characters make a drama. They are the center of attention within the film. Even if the story is amazing, it is nothing without relatable characters that are able to develop it through overcoming obstacles or falling deeper into them. With all this information, I have learned the importance in sculpting a great character before deciding to film something.
