Genre Research

 Week 1

The 'Portfolio Project' begins! Me and my group member, Camila Coloma, are beginning our journey into a deeper understanding of media; films to be specific. We are currently working on deciding the genre for our film opening. We thought that Drama would be a spectacular choice because it is a great way to express feeling on the screen with mise-en-scene. Drama uses mise-en-scene heavily through the use of costumes and lighting. Our project will implement these techniques and more to add emotion and (most importantly!) drama.

Drama's target audience is mainly females between the ages of 16-30. The thing with drama is that it can be implemented in a variety of ways. This allows the genre to have a larger reach and resonate with diverse audiences.

A few conventions of Drama films are as follows:

  • High Stakes
  • Social, political, or religious turmoil
  • Conflict between characters and relationships
  • Constant action
  • Use of lighting and colors to show emotion
  • Exuberant costume design
The other genre we are interested in working on is 'coming-of-age', but it seems like we are leaning more into drama.

Camila and I will do research on both genres and watch movies on each time before beginning our filming. Till next time!
